Organisms are saprophytic inhabitants of soil and decaying plants and animal matter

Entry to the Body ENTRY TO THE BODY
Unable to penetrate skin so introduced into the subcutaneous tissue via a wound which has been contaminated with soil containing the organism

Clinical Features CLINICAL FEATURES
In skin, fungi produce nodules which enter the lymphatics, producing more nodules.
Nodules then drain to the skin surface.

Infections are slow developing once in the tissue, maybe over a period of years

Most infections involve individuals who walk barefoot.
Most infections involve barefoot agricultural workers.

Diagnosis DIAGNOSIS
Culture organism from the infected tissue.

Treatment TREATMENT
Surgical exclusion and antibiotics.
oral fluorocytosine, amphotericin B
Chromoblastmoycosis
Maduromycosis
Sporotrichosis
