CUTANEOUS INFECTIONS

These ringworm infections are named according to the part of the body they infect.
All of these diseases are caused by Dermatophytes - Trichyophyton, Epidermophyton, and Microsporum.

Severity of the infection caused can vary, and will depend on the organism involved. and sensitivity of the host to the organism

Clinical Features TINEA PEDIS
Organism -T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, E.floccosum

Infects - Feet - Athletes foot
Clinical symptoms - Vary from scaling to pustules
Itching frequently present, unpleasant odour

Blistering or cracked skin
Warmth, humidity, trauma increases susceptibility
Susceptibility increases with age

Clinical Features TINEA MANNUM
Organism - T. rubrum, T.mentagrophytes, E. floccosum
Infects - Hands
Clinical symptoms - Similar effects to Athletes foot.

Clinical Features TINEA CORPORIS
Organism - T.rubrum, T.mentagrophytes, M.canis.
Infects - Bare and smooth skin
Clinical symptoms - Red, scaly lesions/blisters, itching
Occurs after direct contact with infected animals or humans

Commonly spread by sharing towels, clothes

Clinical Features

TINEA CAPITIS
Organism
- Trichophyton or Microsporum sp,

Infects - Scalp hair, eyebrows, eyelashes
Clinical symptoms - Hair loss, scaling, and itching, inflammation

Usually in childhood, in conditions of poor hygiene and overcrowding
Diagnosed by UV fluorescent light

Clinical Features TINEA CRURIS
Organism - E.floccosum, T.mentagrophtes, T.rubrum
Infects the groin and buttocks

Clinical symptoms - similar to T.corporis
Causing factors - Moisture, skin trauma, wet/tight clothes, obesity

Commonest in males, spread from the feet.

Clinical Features TINEA BARBAE
Organism - T.mentagrophytes or T. verrucosum
Infects beard hair
Clinical Symptoms - red lesions, itching
Usually in men in contact with infected animals
