Straightening reaction in gravitropically bending Coprinus cinereus stem

A schematic illustration of the straightening reaction.

After turning into horizontal position, the bending process begins quite close to the apex. However, well before the apex reaches the vertical position, the apical part begins to straighten. During the bending process the straightening progresses in the basipetal direction. In the final stages of gravitropic reaction most of the curvature is concentrated near the base (and the part which bent first is now straight).

Actual experimental data on Coprinus cinereus stem, including the error bar in the top left.

The straight part is marked in red and separated by conditional line. The length of the stems was normalised to 1. Computer - based image analysis also indicates the straightening process in more basal subsection.
